From Ranelagh to Malaga......PIGSY follows in the footsteps of George Campbell

As many of you will know Ranelagh painter George Campbell, while Belfast born,  lived on Florence Terrace in Ranelagh in the 1950's and 60's. Travelling between Spain and Ireland, he became captivated by Spain and he settled in a small town just outside of Malaga, called Pedregalejo. While living in Pedregalejo he painted the exuberance of Spanish life and his works featured bull fighting, religious processions, market trading along with Flemenco dancers and guitarists. As well as working as an artist, Campbell learned to speak Spanish and become an accomplished guitar player. George Campbell was revered in Spain and indeed he was even honoured by the Spanish Government with the award of Commander and the Insignia and Privileges of the Order of the Merito Civile.

And now another one of Ranelagh's own has made their way to Malaga with former Ranelagh Arts Centre Studio Resident, PIGSY presenting his latest solo show in La Casa Amarilla Art and Culture Centre. This upcoming showcase of PIGSY's artwork is the culmination of his most recent art residency in the studios of LCA Malaga, where he is creating a body of work  that will examine the theme of "Interlocked", and how seemingly unrelated things are connected.

The title of the exhibition will be "First Things Last" which comes from a variation on a quote in the famed Quentin Tarantino movie Reservoir Dogs, and for PIGSY "First Things Last" explains the concept for this art residency and the importance of the creation of the art during the period in residency. "In effect", he explains, "I start out with a blank white canvas and then move on to the production stage where I paint on the canvas. The next part of the process is to show the work created in the exhibition at the end. However, this is not the end for the works of art as the very next day after the exhibition finishes on Saturday I will be painting over all of the works that have not sold or been reserved during the exhibition. I will be re-painting them white which will bring me (lastly) back to the first part of the process. It is a circular process, and it is literally, first thing last".

PIGSY's artworks will be presented over two days, in the Calle Santos Studio Gallery of La Casa Amarilla. And anyone seeing them during these days, could be the first and last time that they view them, with each painting being possibly repainted in white the day after the exhibition in order to give PIGSY a "clean slate" as he moves on from Spain as he travels through Europe and engaging in different artistic opportunities that present to him.

And for those of us who will be in Ranelagh rather than Malaga for the opening of "First Things Last", we can still see the artworks as they will be presented on PIGSY's Instagram @pigsyinspace
